Internal Alignment

Take advantage of our proven process to successfully navigate the complex change required to align ESG and sustainability strategies with core business objectives.

Why is achieving internal ESG alignment so important?

Successfully integrating environmental, social, and governance factors into the core business strategy can be very challenging for leadership teams to manage.

The process often reveals other governance and managerial gaps that have gone unaddressed in the business. Examples include lack of business processes, missing policies, and outdated data management practices . In addition, functional managers may lack the necessary resources, skills, incentives, roadmap and vision to drive progress on their own. We can help.

Our proven process helps business leaders take the first critical steps to overcoming common ESG and sustainability planning challenges. The first step to success with ESG alignment is to understand the origins, evolution, and current state of corporate sustainability best practices for your sector, size, and position in the value chain. Then, we can help your team begin to achieve a common vision or ambition on each major social and environmental issue. It may take competitive benchmarking, cost-benefit analysis, technical studies, and other planning steps to validate that a vision is feasible in the first place.

ESG Alignment Testimonial

“They helped us create a step-by-step sustainability roadmap that has already lived through a number of major growth milestones including new acquisitions, leadership changes, and new market launches. When I look at where we are today and where we started with ESG planning, I am confident that we are on the right track. Bringing customer insights and external market research into the process was a benefit that increased our level of confidence and helped with prioritization. We have now been through a formal ESG reporting cycle with our investor and they are also satisfied with our year-over-year progress.”

ESG Alignment Case Study: Nice-Pak

Nice-Pak, a category leader in consumer-packaged goods, aimed to stay ahead of consumer and retailer expectations in sustainable packaging, responsible sourcing of forest-derived materials, end-of-life impacts, and other ESG issues in key areas of business operations. Third Partners was hired to integrate with their team as an outsourced chief sustainability officer. Through a maturity audit, materiality assessment, executive workshops, and other best practices, Third Partners enabled Nice-Pak to align their executive team on a comprehensive long-term sustainability plan. We also strengthened Nice-Pak’s current operations to outperform retailer expectations for environmental performance and disclosure, and enabled the company to confidently communicate data-driven sustainability claims to B2B and B2C audiences as part of their launch of sustainable product and packaging innovations.

Internal Alignment FAQ

Decarbonization (taking positive action on corporate climate impact) is an issue that many companies need a sustainability and ESG consultancy such as Third Partners to help with. A smart climate impact strategy for a company involves technical data analysis, carbon accounting, forward-looking projections, scenario analysis, and a carefully prioritized action plan that consists of specific action steps, cost-benefit analysis, and an accountability structure that spans multiple departments (e.g. R&D, finance, operations).

Vision, Skills, Incentives, Resources, and a step-by-step Action Plan. The Action Plan must include immediate next steps, accountability, and a longer range set of activities to go from the current level of performance to a desired future state of improved performance.

Lack of alignment on definitions, priorities, and foundational next steps for taking action on environmental and social issues. To create alignment, an ESG and sustainability consultancy such as Third Partners will conduct interviews, collaborative workshops, and strategic planning sessions with C-Suite teams and business unit leaders. Third Partners will provide a variety of data and insights from peers, competitors, customers, employees and other stakeholders in order to help leadership teams prioritize their environmental and social impact investments in areas that provide the greatest return-on-investment for the company and its stakeholders.

Governance, the “G” in ESG,” describes how an organization manages environmental and social issues, including accountability and incentive structures, policies and procedures, metrics/KPIs, and more. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to governance but a sustainability and ESG consultancy such as Third Partners will work with a leadership team to put a clear governance structure in place that complements the existing organizational structure.
